An impressive week for the Patriots program continues as Darius Maddox has committed to George Mason. A 6’5 wing out of Bowie, MD, Maddox spent the first three years of his career at Virginia Tech where his role grew into a starting spot for the Hokies. Prior to a personal leave of absence that caused him to miss the final 14 games of the season, Maddox had started 19 of the 20 games he played in, averaging 8.5ppg and 3.2rpg. He has 2 years of eligibility remaining.
Although his shooting numbers dipped a little bit last season, Maddox has a reputation as a high-level shooter. He owns a 42.6% career mark from long range, while converting 82.5% of his free throw opportunities. Maddox provides the staff with a floor spacer that is proficient at knocking down spot up 3s, but can also create his own mid-range jump shot off the dribble on hard closeouts.
Coach Skinn and Maddox have a long-standing relationship. While Tony was an Assistant at Seton Hall, Maddox; a 4-star recruit who started his high school career at St. John’s College High School before moving on to Oak Hill Academy, took multiple visits to South Orange prior to committing to the Hokies. That relationship no doubt played a role in Maddox choosing Mason over a host of other offers this go around.
Simply put, Maddox is a massive addition to this roster. His ability to knock down shots, play tough defense on the wing, and serve as another experienced voice who has played in and won big time games will go a long way in helping make up for the departures of DeVon Cooper, Victory Bailey Jr, and Justyn Fernandez in the backcourt and on the wing.
It’s been an exciting week thus far for George Mason fans as the roster has started to take a bit more shape. Something to keep in mind: it’s only Wednesday, there could be more to come. #StayTuned
