The Patriots received their first commitment of the Tony Skinn era yesterday in the form of 6’4 transfer guard Jared Billups. His announcement was the first of two pledges the Patriots received yesterday, as Senior forward Amari Kelly joined him in selecting Fairfax as a transfer destination. The Waldorf, MD native comes to George Mason after two years at Siena.

Last season with the Saints, Billups averaged 8.1ppg and 6.6rpg, along with furthering his reputation as an outstanding defender, and leader within the program during games and at practice. He led Siena in defensive rating, defensive win shares, and total rebounds, while also averaging 1.1 steals and 1 block per game. His dedication in the weight room pays dividends on both ends of the floor. Offensively Billups excels at driving into the lane and finishing around the rim and/or getting to the free throw line. Last season he shot 71.8% at the charity stripe, converting 94 of 131 attempts.

Billups took an unofficial visit to campus on April 7th, and although the visit was short, the experience ultimately set the tone for his decision to choose Mason. “Taking my visit felt very comfortable, the staff made me a priority from day 1,” said Billups. “They trust in me and I trust in them. They want me to come in and impact winning in all facets. My vision for me and my future aligned with theirs, so it just felt right. Also, it’s close to home.”

The intangible qualities Billups has displayed thus far in his collegiate career will be invaluable to Coach Skinn as he embarks on his first season at the helm, and it’s clear the staff viewed Jared as someone who can help establish and exemplify the attitude he wants within the program. So, what can Mason Nation expect Billups to bring to the program? “Winning, leadership, and a hard worker. I love to compete and do whatever it takes to win. Coach Skinn wants to start a culture here and he thinks I fit that.”
