The George Mason Patriots hosted the UPenn Quakers this evening. The Patriots showed some promise throughout the game, but returned to their old self, in the final 2 minutes.

After a couple dunks from A.J. Wilson, Mason was able to keep up with UPenn.

However, the Patriots got into foul trouble early in the game.

In the first half, the Quakers scored 33 points, going 12-30 on FG’s, 6-13 on 3’s, and recorded 14 total rebounds.

Mason recorded 37 points, going 14-27 on FG’s, 0-3 on 3’s, and recorded 18 total rebounds.

The Quakers’ guard Ryan Betley went down with a bad injury in the early first half and had to be carried off the court.

Here’s what came out of it:

I hope for the best for Betley, I always hate seeing things like this, especially in the first game of the season.

In the second half, the Quakers scored 39 points, going 17-24 on FG’s, 2-7 on 3’s, and a miserable 3-12 on free throws. Additionally, they recorded 18 rebounds.

The Patriots scored 34 points, going 14-33 on FG’s, 2-5 on 3’s, and 35 rebounds.

UPENN BEATS THE PATRIOTS 72-71

Some notable things from this game:

  • Jarred Reuter had a solid night. He went 6-12 from the field, was perfect from the charity stripe (3-3), and recorded four rebounds. He scored a total of 15 points and recorded three personal fouls in only 17 minutes of playing time. If the Patriots can get him playing more, hopefully we’ll see more of this.
  • Otis Livingston II and Justin Kier both scored 12 points in this contest. Livingston went 5-11 from the field and oddly enough received two fouls for one play, a technical foul and a personal foul for a brief altercation after a 3-pointer by UPenn’s Eddie Scott near the end of the first half.
  • Kier went 6-12 from the field with a total 12 points scored, recorded eight rebounds, and three steals in his 32 minutes of playing time.
  • Mason’s three-point shooting definitely needs to improve if we want to maintain leads in games. Going 2-8 behind the arc is not acceptable.

This was a disappointing loss, if you didn’t see my tweet at the end of the game, this is how it pretty much ended up.

Anyway, I guess onto the next one, the Patriots take on the American University Eagles on Friday at 7 pm. Hope to see you all there.
