George Mason Falls to Maryland for their First Loss of the Season

On Friday, George Mason (5-1) played Maryland (5-0), in a not-so-close battle.

The Patriots started off the beginning of the half with a 9-2 run. Petey, as always, provided some funny commentary.

It seemed like all was going well in the first half for Mason, that was until the U5 mark. When the Terps changed their defense to the 3-2 zone, the Patriots could not adjust. The Terps capitalized the end of the first half with a 18-2 run. (This is more what I was expecting)

This reminded me of a certain movie.

In the first half, Mason scored 31 points going 12-26 from the floor, 3-9 from behind the arc, recording 14 rebounds and 6 turnovers. The Patriots only scored on 6 of their 10 layups and 6 points off of Maryland’s 12 turnovers.

Mason really needed to continue their stride that began the beginning of the half… they did not.

The Terrapins dominated the final 5 minutes and finished with 43 points, going 14-31 from the floor, 4-12 from three, 11-14 from the charity stripe and recorded 18 rebounds, 8 assists and only 3 turnovers.  Maryland also recorded 14 points in the paint and 9 points off Patriots’ turnovers.

In the second half, Maryland dropped 43 points, going 11-31 from the field, 2-10 from behind the arc, recorded 28 rebounds, 16 points in the paint and 10 points off Mason turnovers.

Mason, while they scored 32 points in the second half, they completely returned to their old self after the U5 mark of the first half. They finished going 8-30 from the floor, 4-14 from three, 12-16 from the line and recorded 18 rebounds and 15 personal fouls.

GEORGE MASON LOSES 86-63 TO MARYLAND

Some things from this one:

Layups. While the Terps had a worse percentage (38%, 9-24), they were able to make convert more from outside the paint. Mason only converted on 8 of their 16 layups.

The scoring drought at the end of the first half absolutely killed the momentum for the Patriots. After the Terps switched to the zone, it was all downhill.

This unfortunately did not happen.

AJ Wilson led the Patriots in points in this one. He finished with 19 points, going 6-12 and recorded 6 rebounds and 3 blocks. (and made a three)

Javon Greene added 11 points and led the team in rebounds, yes rebounds.

There were so many bad fouls in this game. It was not the ref’s fault, but the disciple that the Patriots had in the beginning of the first half had vanished. The Patriots finished with 25 fouls. Yes, 25 fouls. The most since Georgia Southern in 18-19 (33 fouls). Because of this, Maryland had 38 attempts (converting on 30) at the free throw line. Ouch.

Anyways.

George Mason takes on ODU on Monday in the Cayman Island Classic.

See you then.
