Your 8-0 George Mason Patriots are taking on the 5-2 Cornell Big Red. Cornell has been a solid Ivy League team who plays a unique style. They went head to head with Mason during Skinn’s first season, with the Patriots edging out a high-scoring victory.
The Big Red are coached by Jon Jaques, who played four seasons with them and has been on their staff since the 2013-14 season. He took over before last season when Brian Earl left for William & Mary, and has a 23-13 record, going 9-5 in the Ivy League.
Cornell lost their first two games on the road to Kent State and Illinois State, and then won their next five, with one of them being a non-D1, and the other four being Patriot League teams.
Cornell By The Numbers
Cornell is the 147th ranked team on KenPom, with the 101st ranked offense and 254th defense. They are the 116th ranked team on the NET, which means this game is extremely likely to be Q3.
Jaques continued Earl’s trend of playing a very fast pace, with the Big Red having the 11th highest tempo. The offense is doing all of the heavy lifting, with the offense being 7th fastest and defense being 301st.
The biggest weakness in Cornell is their height. They have the fifth shortest team in the country with an average height of 6’3.6. That is small. The bigger problem is that their effective height (height at 4 and 5) is the lowest in the country at 2.8 inches below average.
Offense
This offense is extremely heavily reliant on the three ball. They shoot the fifth most threes in the country on a per-attempt basis at 53.6% of shots being threes, and Cornell is making 41.7% of them, 9th highest. They get the 2nd most percentage of their points from deep in the country at 45.6%. Along with that, the two isn’t getting neglected, as the Ivy League squad is making 59.3% of those as well, 38th. This comes together to give the Big Red the 9th highest eFG percentage in the country at 61.1%.
The reason their offense is just great and not elite is that Cornell struggles with all the things that get you more shot attempts, as they turn the ball over 18.7% of the time, and only get 26.3% of offensive rebound opportunities, which is 235th and 300th.
I love the Moreyball. No midranges. That’s a red paint and a lot of red from outside. You don’t beat Cornell by shooting better shots. You do it by taking more shots.
Cooper Noard, a 6’2 guard, is their number one option at a 30.4% shot share. He averages 21.7 points and 1.7 assists, on 71.6% true shooting and 43.8% from deep on 48 attempts. There really aren’t any weaknesses in his game, as the senior makes 71% of his twos, and draws 6.5 fouls per 40.
Adam Hinton is their number two option at a 26.8% shot share. Hinton is a 6’4 wing, although he has one of the higher assist rates on the team, so you could consider him a pseudo PG. The do-it-all wing averages 13.4 points and 2.9 assists, with a 63.9% true shooting and a 20.4% assist and 8.9% turnover rate. Of course, he makes 46.2% of his threes.
I will only mention the guys who are making more than one three per game, but they have a lot of guys who are something 2-3 or 3-4 on the season, so you have to watch out for everyone.
Corbin Zentner is 11-22 on the season from deep, Jake Flegen is 6-12, DJ Nix is 6-19. You have to watch out for these guys.
Defense
Cornell lets up an average eFG% and rebounds the ball well, only giving up 26.9% of offensive rebound opportunities, 70th. They don’t force many turnovers, only 15.7%, 268th, and foul a decent bit, with opponents shooting 39.7 free throws per 100 shots, 247th least.
That is a lot of shots let up at the rim. I can tell they love the let opponents shoot the midrange, which kind of goes in line with their shot diet at the other end.
6’5 Josh Baldwin leads the team in block rate and overall blocks per game at 8.2% and 1.4, despite only playing 35.6% of minutes.
6’4 Jake Flegen also has a 4.3% block rate.
Cornell has guys who have logged minutes at the four and five who do not have a single block on the season.
Kaspar Sepp is their saving grace on this end, as he is 6’7 and has a 29.7% defensive rebound rate, which is 10th highest in the country.
Josh Baldwin commits 5.8 fouls per 40, Sepp at 7.7, DaMaryon Fishburm at 6.6, Ryan Burbach at 9, Gioacchinp Panzini at 5.9, and Jax Abalos at 11.4 in small minutes. I will note that a lot of these guys play super small minutes and will very likely not foul out.
Cornell Scouting Report (First Half vs. Colgate)
Cornell makes lot of platoon subs, which makes sense for a team that plays at such a high pace.
Offense
Noard will shoot deep contested threes, but will take the first open one he sees. You cannot give him anything. His biggest weakness is his passing, as he will be a little ball-stoppy, and will sometimes have a pass predetermined that gets covered, which will turn into a turnover sometimes. The 6’2 guard will also make jump passes, which can be big problems.
The Big Red will often shoot the first open three they see, which can be before the shot clock hits 20. You have to play close defense the first ten seconds, no sagging off while you are setting something up, as they will shoot one if you fall asleep.
Cornell’s shooters will shoot over guys going under screens, you can’t do that often. They will look for threes in transition in two on ones.
There are lots of cuts to the rim and live dribble passes to get open shots, along with give and go cuts to the basket with a pass from a screener. There is tons of ball movement, but it can get a little careless sometimes if someone is in the way. It feels a little predetermined, like they are checking their blind spot but switching lanes regardless of what they see.
Their biggest weakness is how they handle pressure defense. The problem is that if they break the pressure, someone is probably open.
Their big man will handle it on the perimeter and are true triple threats, being able to pass, drive, or shoot. Sepp can attack closeouts and beat his man to the rim.
Defense
The small team struggles with post defense, and pretty much anything interior. If a big gets a deep post touch, it is over. They have to double the post pretty often, so if Mason can recreate the Oduro offense, it will go very well.
Cornell seemed to switch very often, which makes sense when you might have zero bigs on the court. On those switches, they might briefly double.
The Big Red can get beat by off-ball movement, and generally there are no rim protectors to bail them out.
They will also play some full court man press.
Jacoh Beccles has trouble staying in front of his man.
What Does This Mean For Mason?
This is the type of game you are very glad Mason isn’t opening up their season with. I think some guys will get pulled for a little bit if they leave someone open from three, since they are bound to get punished for it.
Allenspach is going to be an x-factor in this game. Can he use his size to his advantage? Or will he be too slow and be a liability? I’m leaning towards the first, since JMU somewhat tried to make him a liability with a no-big lineup and got smoked in the post.
I predict an 80-70 game. As I thought with the JMU game, I think Mason will be able to score at will, but Cornell will keep themselves in it by hitting a couple more threes than Patriots fans would like.
