Your 7-0 George Mason Patriots are taking on the 5-3 James Madison Dukes in an old-school CAA rivalry that seems to be coming back as of late. The teams played last season in Harrisonburg and Mason won 66-61 in a battle.
The biggest notes from that game are that it was the Jalen Haynes breakout game, and there was a guy at the front of my section who kept screaming at KD Johnson, and unfortunately for him, it was right before KD went on his own little mini takeover which included 5 points and an assist.
It was also the game where it felt like the Patriots killed the defensive rebounding demons.
Some notable Dukes are Paul Lewis, who was teammates with Malik Presley during Presley’s freshman season at Vanderbilt, and Eli Wilborn, who spent last season with Duquesne. Back-to-back Dukes teams for him.
James Madison is coached by Preston Spradlin, who is in his second season with the Dukes. Before that, he ran the show at Morehead State and made the tournament twice, where the coach crossed paths with Devon Cooper. Spradlin has an overall record of 165-124, which includes 25-15 at JMU and 13-5 in Sun Belt play.
James Madison By The Numbers
James Madison is the 153rd ranked team on KenPom, with the 82nd offense and 314th defense. Yes, you read that right. 314th defense. A difference of 232.
That is one behind the leader in defense ranking – offense, which is Washington State, with the 88th offense and 321st defense. The largest defense – offense difference I could find is Marist, with the 321st offense and 42nd defense. Insane.
JMU has been playing pretty slow, with the 298th fastest pace, and the 290th fastest offense, but have the 76th fastest defense. Since opponents aren’t turning it over a lot, and their defense is really bad, I am going to assume that means they’re giving up open shots early and often.
Offense
The Dukes take and make a lot of threes, with them hitting 41.1% of their shots from beyond the arc, 15th highest, and taking 46.2% of their shots from deep, which is 61st most. They score 42.7% of their points from the three-ball, which is 8th most, and is 11.6 percentage points above the average.
Everywhere else, James Madison is pretty average, with the 61st best eFG% at 55.5, which is carried by their three, also having the 154th and 175th turnover and offensive rebounding percentage. Their weakness is only having 30 free throws per 100 shots, 299th most. That does make sense for a team who shoots so many threes.
That is a whole lot of red from three. Scary. The interior being pretty small and a having a decent amount of blue is reassuring.
JMU has three main options, a 1A in Justin McBride, a 1B in Cliff Davis, and a 3 in Bradley Douglas.
Justin McBride is a 6’7 forward who takes 28.5% of the shots, has a 70.3% true shooting, and is hitting 60% of his threes on 25 attempts, 12th highest. I assume that number won’t stay, but he’s hitting 56.8% of his twos, so the forward won’t come crashing down if the threes start missing.
Cliff Davis is a 6’2 off-guard who takes 27.7% of the shots, with a 57% true shooting, and is making 37.5% of his threes on 56 attempts. This guy is kind of just chucking up threes, but they are going in.
Bradley Douglas is a 6’1 point guard who takes 25% of the shots, has a 57.9% true shooting, a 32.7% assist rate, which is 83rd highest, compared to only a 17.4% turnover rate, while hitting 36.7% of his threes. This guy is the engine of their offense. Along with all of that, Douglas is drawing 5.9 fouls per 40, with a 50.7 free throw rate, and is hitting 86.1% of his free throws.
Wings/Forwards Preston Fowler and Eddie Ricks are shooting very well, making 48.1% and 45.5% of their threes on 27 and 22 attempts. There will always be a plentiful amount of shooting on the court.
Defense
The defense doesn’t look too bad on first glass, with an above-average eFG% at 50.1%, 151st best. The problem is that teams are getting a lot of extra chances, and more free throws. They are only forcing turnovers on 14.7% of possessions, 303rd most, giving up offensive rebound on 34.6% of opportunities, 265th least, and letting opponents shoot 44 free throws per 100 shots, with is 297th least.
This doesn’t look like the shot chart that you would expect from a sub-300 defense, but it makes a lot more sense when you look at how weak the offenses they’ve played are. JMU gave up a point per possession to the worst offense in the country in Coppin State.
Justin McBride is a big part of the offense, and still manages to have a 4% block rate. The problem is he is averaging 5.2 fouls per 40, which is a lot, but not insane. You’ll see insane in a second.
Christian Brown and Eli Wilborn have 11.1 and 15.7% block rates. The problem is that they commit 9.6 and 10.2 fouls per 40. I see why they get those blocks. At least Wilborn has crazy rebounding numbers at 22.9% and 25.4% on the offensive and defensive side, albeit in only about 8 minutes per game.

Offense
You cannot go under screens with this team. Everyone will shoot if they are open.
Paul Jones will shoot from deeep.
Justin McBride gets a lot of post touches. Possessions that start with a one-on-one post touch with him end up going pretty well. Mason is going to need one of the three centers to step up. You can’t leave McBride open in transition, but he can get out of control downhill
Defense
It felt like a very help-heavy man defense. They can get beat by cross-court passes, and I know Mincy will try a couple of those.
The Dukes can lose their man off-ball pretty often.
For a possession, JMU ran a 2-3 fluid zone. It moved from 2-3 to 1-3-1 to 1-1-3 to 2-2-1, just kind of doing random things to confuse the offense. It worked well until they needed to get a rebound. James Madison let up two offensive rebounds and there was a guy close to the mic who was not very happy.
Ricks is a pretty good post defender. The team will send a delayed double in the post.
From watching, I didn’t see a sub 300 defense, but I think I saw their best defense.
What Does This Mean For Mason?
Mason is two games away from heading to Blacksburg 9-0 to get their signature win, but you cannot forget about the two games on the way there. JMU at 154 and Cornell at 177 are both games that you should win, especially at home, but are definitely not locks.
I predict a 80-70 win for the Patriots. I think that JMU cannot stop Mason, but they do hit some threes and keep themselves in the game.
I am too young for this, but keep in mind that GMU-JMU is a massive rivalry from the CAA, and should be treated as such, especially for the guy running the show, Tony Skinn.
