Mason Takes on Wofford In Season Opener

Finally, it is opening day.

Your George Mason Patriots are taking on the Wofford Terriers at EagleBank in the season opener. The Terriers are in their first game under first-time head coach Kevin Giltner.

Since this is his first season and there have been no games, we will look at his past. Giltner was an assistant with Wofford under current Virginia Tech HC Mike Young from 2013-14 to 2018-19, after playing with them for his four years. After that, he went to Virginia Tech until this season.

Mike Young is known for prioritizing offense, taking a lot of threes, and his teams not getting to the line. The tempo has generally been slow.

Wofford By The Numbers

It will be hard to do much here since there aren’t any numbers yet, and there is no game to watch.

I wouldn’t put much weight into an exhibition or two, but I do not believe Wofford played one anyway.

To the numbers.

The Wofford Terriers’ preseason ranking on KenPom is 224th, with the 184th offense and 271st defense. On Torvik, they are 246th, with the 252nd offense and 227th defense. The overall rankings are pretty similar, but as you can see, the way they get there is pretty different.

I am going to have to lean towards Torvik being right, as I believe they do a better job purely evaluating the roster, as KenPom has a decent amount of weight attached to the school.

Wofford is projected to be middle of the pack in the SoCon on both Torvik and KenPom.

The Roster

Based on Torvik’s ten-man rotation, Wofford has four true freshmen, four returners, and two transfers.

Junior Nils Machowksi is projected to be their best player, with him being predicted to put up 14.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. Machowski is a 6’3 guard who spent his first two seasons at UCF, being a poor outside shooter while being a solid rotation player.

Cayden Vasko, a 6’6 junior wing, played on the Central Michigan team that unfortunately beat Mason. He seems like a shoot-only guy, as over half of his shots were from three, shooting 36% from beyond the arc, and only 40% from two. Vasko is projected to get 11.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game.

Their top returning player is Luke Flynn, who played nearly 20 minutes a game as a freshman. This is absolutely a shoot-only guy, as he took 88 threes, making 37.5% of them, and 18 twos. Flynn took four non-rim twos and zero dunks all season, which is a really funny combo. The 6’1 guard is projected to put up 10.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game.

I’m not sure I trust the assist number prediction from Torvik, as even when I went to Braden Smith from Purdue, a guy who averaged 8.7 assists last season and could break the assist record, is only projected to average 6.5. So it takes a crazy outlier for the prediction to not just be extremely consistent with usage rate.

What Does This Mean For Mason?

It is concerning if this is a competitive game. Wofford is a decent brand, but this does not seem to be your typical SoCon contending Wofford team. My prediction is that Mason wins 75-55. The defense is great but not lockdown, and the offense is good but not elite.

I think you are more likely to get an understanding of how the players play within the team than figuring out how good the team actually is with this level of opponent. There would need to be a real firebombing for me to get excited.
