Mason Gets a Big Time Commit in Shane Pendergrass

Your George Mason Patriots have gotten a commitment from four-star 2026 wing/forward Shane Pendergrass.

Pendergrass is a 6’8 wing/forward out of Hargrave Military Academy, but attended Mount Zion before that. A DMV guy. His current 247Composite rating is .9576, making him a four-star, and the 112th player in the country.

A lot of his background information was covered in his recent visit article.

This is a huge first get in the class of 2026, and with how often they were having contact with him, it seems like he may have been the top target. Mason beat out Louisiana Tech, La Salle, Duquesne, Cal, and Boise State.

Shane Pendergrass Scouting Report (First Half + vs Fork Union)

Fork Union is more of a football than basketball school, so I could not find any of their players getting D1 offers.

I believe he got injured early in the second half, as he went out and did not come back in, and was not on the bench. His team had a big lead that slowly decayed the longer he stayed out.

Athleticism/Intangibles

Pendergrass is built. It makes sense since he reclassified from 2025, but he really looks physically dominant.

The 6’8 wing has more of the smoothness than explosiveness type of athleticism, which doesn’t look impressive at first glance, until you notice nobody ever gets around him.

Offense

The first thing I noticed was that Shane was a willing off-ball drifter. He wasn’t exactly a sudden mover, but would move enough to force the defense to do something.

For play style, Pendergrass would play both in the paint and on the perimeter.

In the paint, the wing goes up strong. I didn’t see any plays where it felt like he got a worse shot than he should’ve. If Shane gets leverage in the post, he is scoring.

Pendergrass is pretty good on the offensive boards, as he gets himself in good position and doesn’t give it up.

On the perimeter, the 6’8 DMV native has a confident midrange and corner shot, and creates separation with a stepback or sidestep. His shot is high and fast enough that he punishes anyone who digs off of him.

Something I really liked was that Shane was a threat from three in transition. The transition three is one of the most efficient shots in basketball. Give me some of that.

His free throw form was solid, which is always good.

The 6’8 wing’s playmaking may be his biggest wildcard, as he makes some daring passes when cut off on his dribble, and they don’t always work out. But the passing flashes are pretty unreal. If you get some more consistency there, Shane has potential to be a secondary playmaker.

Defense

Pendergrass is an awesome all-around defender. I did not really notice a weakness.

Shane is sticky on off-ball cuts, which is going to be useful against Richmond and Davidson.

The wing played a both inside and outside on this side of the ball, being able to play the rim protector role pretty well. The positioning was pretty impressive. He wasn’t an amazing rebounder, giving you more of wing production at that.

On the perimeter, Pendergrass is really good at saying in front of his man. If a guy picks up his dribble, he is not going to get anything good. He covered a guard from the perimeter to the rim. There was no separation, he forced a shot clock violation, and it would have been a jump ball if the shot clock didn’t exist.

Areas Of Improvement

Activity – This probably has to do with being a number one option with a heavy offensive load, but Pendergrass was not too active without the ball in his hands. He was active on defense, so that gives me confidence that it could be a coaching decision rather than a lazy effort thing.

That was kind of it, besides being a little inconsistent when he is pressured with the ball.

Shane Pendergrass- Welcome to Mason. Tony Skinn has had his eye on the 6’8” wing originally from Maryland since basically day one. It’s encouraging to see that multi-year process pay off for the Patriots. 

I watched the first half of Hargrave’s game against Fork Union to get a look at Pendergrass and his play. I was impressed with his offensive game early on. He hit a very nice fadeaway two early from the right side (and was arguably fouled while doing so if you watch the tape). Pendergrass also showed a comfortability behind the three point line. He missed an early three, but hit one from the left side corner a few minutes later. 

Defensively, Pendergrass was positionally sound. It did not look like he missed many assignments or looked out of position when Hargrave was on defense at all this half. His long wingspan put a lot of Fork Union players off when he was defending them. I don’t think the Fork Union players took a single three if Pendergrass was in front of them. 

He was not super aggressive in terms of rebounding. Hargrave did have true centers that they played, so that may not be his main job when he’s on the floor, but players who play power forward for Tony Skinn and co. need to be able to rebound in the Patriot Pressure system- this is something I have full confidence in the coaching staff teaching and getting out of Pendergrass (just look at the ‘Pressure Week’ the team is doing alone now), but it is a weakness of him to note that I saw in the tape.

I go back and forth if Pendergrass has ‘point forward’ potential when watching the tape. There were multiple moments where he took the ball up the floor himself and looked comfortable doing so, but he also had a few turnovers when doing so. But that seems to be an avenue for Pendergrass to develop- his passing looked good and that’s a real positive to watch. 

Overall, Pendergrass seems to have both a solid offensive bag and defensive mindset as a recruit. He’s a level above a couple of other recruits and I see him very much like I saw Emmanuel Kanga last year- someone who I think could get serious minutes as a freshman here at George Mason. I’m very excited to have Shane joining the Mason nation, and you all should be too!

“What made Mason the best choice for me was that they weren’t too far from home, the way they plan on developing me, the history they have with tall and lengthy versatile wings like Keyshawn Hall, Woody Newton, and Jalen Haynes.”

“The relationship with the staff has always been tight, they have been recruiting me forever it seems like that’s how long we have been building our relationship.”

Tell George Mason fans what kind of player they should expect to see when you step on campus.

“The type of player that Mason fans can expect is someone that is gonna have great energy not only on the court but off the court also.”

Where Does He Fit In?

I think Pendergrass is better fit as a big wing who does forward stuff sometimes than a true forward.  

The low-end player comparison for Shane Pendergrass is former La Salle wing Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi. I see similarity in playstyle and role, with them both being big wings/smaller forwards. I think that Pendergrass would be as good as Tunde day 1, and has a much higher ceiling. His floor being a solid A10 player is very good.

A fun medium-end comparison for him is a more on-ball Isaiah Bigelow, who was a do-it-all wing for Richmond, and peaked as the third best player on a team who won the A10 regular season. I would take getting that out of Shane.

A high-end comparison could be a more defensive-minded Nate Santos. Santos was an excellent offensive player who left a little to be desired on the defensive end. I think that Pendergrass will give you everything you want and more as a defender, while being able to hit shots and facilitate on the offensive end.

Of course, it is hard to predict a depth chart a full season out in this era of insane amounts of player movement, but as of now, the bigger wing (3-4) depth chart would be Malik Presley, Ryan-Preston Mendy, and then wherever you think Shane should go in. I personally would put him between Presley and Mendy there, but it is tough to pencil in a freshman above a sophomore before they step foot on the court. With the way the roster is currently put together, it gives him a very good opportunity to get real playing time early.

Overall, this is a major get with a lot of upside, but also a high floor, which is the best type of get. I don’t really see a world where Pendergrass isn’t at least a rotation player on a contending team.

I personally am very excited for the first 2026 get, and I think you should be as well. This guy would have been Mason’s highest rated commit if he did this in August, as his 247Composite score was higher than Erik Copes until September 3rd.
