Your George Mason Patriots have their first portal visit; a guard who can boogie, Jermahri “Fatt” Hill.
I’m not sure if this is a Ticket situation, but since he is listed as Jermahri on Ball State’s website, I will call him that.
Jermahri Hill is a 6’5 guard/wing out of Bessemer, Alabama, who played his first two seasons at two Jucos, and a third season at Ball State. This gives him between one and three years of eligibility, since I still do not know what is going on with Juco years.
Based on his highlights, this dude is a crazy athlete who can get himself open. He is beating everyone on a race to the rim. It kind of reminds me of what KD Johnson did, where he could create his own shot, but maybe could not convert at the best rate. Hill has some crazy dunks, and is a super fun lob threat. The high-end highlights look like Donovan Mitchell.
Jermahri Hill By The Numbers
Hill spent his first Juco year at Pearl River, where he averaged 15.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, on 48.7% from the field and 33.7% from three, along with 72% from the line. If he put up that type of efficiency at Mason, I would be elated.
The Alabama native spent his second Juco year at South Plains College, where he averaged 14.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.2 assists, on 45% overall, 24.1% from three, and 75.5% from the line.
During his season at the MAC’s Ball State, he averaged 15.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.8 turnovers, and a steal on 42.3% overall, 23.2% from three, 67.1% from the line, giving him an effective field-goal percentage of 45.1% and a true shooting of 50.3%.
His Ball State team played against Dayton and Richmond, and although they lost both, from looking at the stat sheet, it was not Jermahri’s fault. Between the two games, he averaged 23.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1 turnover on 47.1% from the field, which includes 57.1% from two, and shot 11.5 free throws per game, hitting 65.2% of them. Some of those numbers are really fun, like the rim pressure, and some are not, like hitting 65.2% of his FTs and going 0-6 from three.
His true shooting could be a lot higher than his eFG% if he hit more of his free throws, as Hill drew 5.7 fouls per 40 minutes and took 49.9 free throws per 100 shots. In conference play, he got up to 6.2 and 54.3, which was fifth and sixth in the MAC.
KenPom lists Jermahri at the three, but his 22% assist rate, the highest among full-time players on his team. That is why I have him as a guard/wing.
According to College Basketball Scouting on YouTube, Hill takes 58% of his shots at the rim, and hits 54% of them. That is a really good stat. That means whatever is going on away from the rim is pretty bad, but I would rather a dude be good at the rim and nowhere else than vice versa. One is more consistent than the other, especially for a guy who might (??) be an option at point guard.
Jermahri is very active on the defensive glass, with a 22% defensive rebound rate. His 23.6% in conference play was eighth in the MAC.
What Does This Mean For Mason?
This is an exciting, high ceiling first visit for this portal season. This would be a great get, considering he may be able to play a wide range of roles.
