Mason Looks Competitive vs. Marquette

Mason lost to Marquette 82-63, a 19-point margin, but the game was much closer for the middle 30 minutes.

The Patriots lost the first five minutes 16-2, and the last seven minutes 21-2. That means they won the middle 30 minutes 59-45. Slow starts on the road were a big problem last season, especially against aggressive defenses, and you cannot overcome them all.

Darius Maddox was pretty awesome, keeping the team afloat for a while. He scored 20 on 7-12 from the field.

Jared Billups also had a typical Jared Billups game, scoring 8 on 4-6 and grabbing 8 boards.

I thought that the bigs would do pretty well in this game, since I was not impressed by Marquette’s bigs against Stony Brook. I underestimated how well Marquette’s “smalls” would be helping. Haynes and Emejuru couldn’t take more than one dribble without having a blazing fast 6’6 dude poking at the ball. They combined for 4 points on 2-6 from the field and only drew two fouls shots, with Gio missing both of them.

Marquette’s David Joplin scored 27, with him pretty much being the 21-2 run to end the game.

There was a lot of Woody Newton negativity, so I feel like I need to make my thoughts clear on him. Him squaring up to fight at the end was probably not smart, but I get it. He shot 1-9 overall and 1-6 from three, but I don’t remember any of those being “oh no” shots. I generally have a lot of forgiveness for players who miss good shots, and there is no universe where Newton should be forced to take third most shots on the team. That is not his role.

My big takeaway from the first two games is that we have had more questions than answers when it comes to the point guard position.

It’s a small sample size, but Brayden O’Connor has a 4:3 assist to turnover ratio at the moment. BOC is an awesome piece off-ball, but has been extremely underwhelming on ball. He can add spacing to lineups that you can’t find anywhere else on the roster at the 2 spot. I really do not get why the 3 and D wing is the starting point guard.

Jeremiah Quigley has played extremely limited minutes, but Marquette was afraid to press when he was in, and the offense looked pretty good. I would really like to see him play extended minutes.

KD Johnson has been not bad running point for the team, and brings so much juice everywhere else that it is pretty surprising that he isn’t running the show. I am still wondering if his and Quigley’s lack of minutes is based on who’s earned them, or if they are still kind of getting punished for whatever suspended them both for the exhibition.

Justin Begg has shown enough that you can tell he’ll be there one day, but now is probably not the time for him to get major minutes.

Overall, if you watched this game, it was not a 19-point blowout. In reality, Mason probably should have lost by 5-7 once Marquette’s cold streak on their open threes ended.
