A Rim Protector Visits Mason

Shahid Muhammad, a 6’11 College of Southern Idaho transfer center out of Queens, New York, is visiting Mason on Sunday, May 19th.

As mentioned in the tweet, Muhammad has two years of eligibility left. Shahid played his freshman season at Seton Hall, but wasn’t really in the rotation, only seeing action in ten games. CSI reported that he has a 7’4 wingspan. That’s long.

In 30 games with his Juco, the Mason visitor averaged 5.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.53 blocks in 21.4 minutes per game on 64.5% shooting from the field and 50.7% from the line. He also averaged 1.93 fouls in those minutes, which gives him a fouls per 40 of 3.62. That is definitely acceptable for a guy who gets so many blocks.

If that block number seems like a lot, that’s because it is. Shahid set the school record for blocks in a season at CSI, a great Juco, with five games left in the season. When you look at his box scores, you could be convinced that his block amounts were rebounds. He had some games where he was on double double watch with points and blocks.

Muhammad is a head at the rim type of athlete. An absolute freak.

Are we serious right now?

Shahid uses that verticality to be a major lob threat. It seems like he gets lots of production out of the dunker spot, and doesn’t have much range.

That vertical also helps in Muhammad’s ability to get putback dunks, giving him some leeway if he mistimes the jump.

I didn’t see an expansive or elaborate post game, but there is a little bit of something there.

I see a lot of blocking as a help defender, which gets me excited. I’ll have to watch a full game to make sure that he isn’t just a block or wide open guy, but I do not think he will be.

Keep in mind that Steve Curran big men have a trend of breaking out under him. I have to imagine a freaky athlete like Muhammad won’t break that.

If Shahid and Mason connect, he would fill the rim protector role for Mason, giving them a much more diverse frontcourt. I have been a bit worried about Mason’s center pieces, as Haynes and Emejuru combine for 8.6 fouls per 40 minutes, which could a problem on some nights if those are your only two guys at the 5. Adding a third guy who only fouls 3.5 times per 40 minutes means it would be extremely rare for all three to be out, or even in foul trouble.

With the most recent activity besides this being a Steve Curran visit to 6’9 forward Larry Olayinka, it seems as though the last scholarship spot will be a big.
