Mason Drops to UMass in a Tragic Loss

Your George Mason Patriots lost a 66-65 heartbreaker to UMass to drops to 15-7 and 4-5 in the conference.

The stats say that Mason-UMass is the second best matchup historically, and this game did not disappoint. Well, if you were not a fan of Mason.

I’ll get this out of the way early. Keyshawn Hall made an incredibly bad decision. But Mason is not in position to go to overtime without Hall’s 23 on 8-16 shooting. Each team had 65 possessions, so to act like Mason lost solely because of a single play would be dishonest. It’s just what happened last.

To be fair to Mason fans, it seems like everyone who was yelling at him online were degenerate gamblers, not actual fans of the team. Make sure to cheer extra loud for Hall at the next home game.

The main reason Mason lost this game was rebounding, especially on the defensive end. UMass got 18 offensive rebounds and had a 52.9% rebounding rate on that end. That means that the average possession had them getting an offensive rebound. I am not sure I have ever seen an offensive rebounding rate that high.

The Patriots’ defensive gameplan worked extremely well in all aspects until the rebound. UMass ended up with an eFG% of 45.4. They only hit 7 of their 22 threes, 4 of which were from Rahsool Diggins. I imagine if you looked at the numbers of UMass’ first shot of each possession, it would be impossible for Mason to have lost. But the possession doesn’t end until Mason has the ball.

Woody Newton did a lot defensively and hit a couple of threes. Watching him fly around at the top of a 1-3-1 zone is so much fun. He was forced to play a lot of center minutes due to Malik Henry being inactive and Amari Kelly fouling out in only 16 minutes. This was the first time Newton hit multiple threes in a game since the Tennessee game in early December, hopefully this can get him back on track from deep. Woody going back to being a three-point threat on top of already being an incredibly versatile defender would do wonders for the bench unit.

Baraka Okojie didn’t do much in the scoring department, with his only basket being the game-tying layup at the end, but he did everything else. Okojie had four assists to his two turnovers and three steals. Even if his play doesn’t show up in the box score, you know whoever he is guarding is having a rough day.

Mason HAS to win their upcoming game at home against Loyola Chicago. You cannot drop to 4-6.
