Tony Skinn has had a strong transfer class, and he will be adding a sixth member to it. Woody Newton, a 6’9 wing from Oklahoma State, committed to playing for your George Mason Patriots on April 28th.

After one season at Syracuse and two seasons at Oklahoma State, Newton, a District Heights native, is coming back to the DMV. The trend of Skinn bringing in DMV transfers continues.
Woody was a 4-star prospect coming out of high school on 247Sports, and a 3-star transfer prospect this offseason.
The Oklahoma State transfer will have two seasons of eligibility, or one if he decides to waive his COVID year.
In the 2022-23 season, Woody was a part time starter for Oklahoma State, starting in 13 of the 29 games he played in. Newton averaged 4.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and .5 assists on 36.4% from the field and 27.7% from three. While his raw shooting percentage may seem low, this is because he was taking more threes than twos last season, taking 1.8 twos per game and 2.2 threes per game.
It seems as though Skinn’s offensive system will be less three-centric than English’s system. This will benefit Newton’s game, since while he can and will hit threes, he is considerably more efficient on twos. In his career, he averages 1 point per shot on twos and .891 points per shot on threes.
Newton will likely be competing for a spot in the starting lineup, likely at the 4 spot, possibly the 3. If he doesn’t start, he will certainly get major playing time off the bench.
Say hello to Woody Newton

Woody Newton is the athletic wing that every team cannot get enough of and will be another piece Skinn will be able to use when the team needs his combination of size and speed. If he can put it all together, he can be something special.
