On Thursday, George Mason took on GW in a game different than the previous matchups.
After the PA announcer finally decided to pronounce Justin Kier’s name correctly, Mason finally started to pull away (kind of).
In the first 10 minutes, the two programs went back and forth trading buckets. The Colonials kept it close due to a couple of unforced Mason turnovers, 4 to be exact. This half ended up tied at 31.
Mason went 13-28 from the field, 2-8 from behind the arc, recorded 15 rebounds (only one on the offensive glass), 3 blocks, and 3 steals. This was subpar. GW’s sliced through the Patriots’ defense easily, scoring on multiple dunks and layups and also a couple uncontested threes.
GW finished the half going 12-29 from the floor, 4-11 from three, recorded 16 rebounds and dished out 7 assists. GW’s decent three-point shooting continued into the second half.
In the second half, the Patriots scored 29 points, going 8-24 from the floor, 4-11 from behind the arc and recorded 26 rebounds, 6 assists, and 7 turnovers. While the Patriots did perform better in this half, their perimeter defense was still lackluster.
GW came to fight in this half, they scored 26 points, going 9-31 from the field, 5-13 from three, and recorded 16 rebounds, 7 assists, and only 2 turnovers.
GEORGE MASON WINS 61-57 OVER GW
Some things from this one:
Congrats to Justin Kier, he surpassed the 1000th point mark in the first half. He finished this game scoring 26 points and recorded 5 assists and 8 rebounds.
Justin Kier (26 points vs. GW) becomes the 38th player in Mason history to surpass 1,000 career points. He also rises to 36th on the scoring list with 1,014 points. #MasonRecords

Otis Livingston II’s career continues as the Patriots move on to play the Bonnies at 2:30 pm tomorrow. He finished with 12 points, going 4-16 from the field and 3-8 from three.
Otis Livingston II (3 3pters vs. GW) is now 3rd all-time at @MasonMBB in 3pt baskets made. He passed Mike Hargett and now has 201 3pters made in his career. #MasonRecords

This game should not have been this close. GW’s defense shut down a lot of the Patriots today holding all but two players to under 8 points. Mason needs to perform better if they want to defeat St. Bonaventure.
This game should not be tied. GW’s 1-3-1 slowed us down because we’re missing jumpers. Keep feeding the post, keep making the extra pass and get buckets around the rim. Can’t let a zone beat you for too long.

Hopefully this was just a warmup game.
Anyway.
George Mason takes on St. Bonaventure tomorrow at 2:30pm.
See you there.
